Because the busy season for grilling peaks in July, we thought it was important to share a few grilling tips to keep your family safe this summer.

Grill Safety Tips

According to the National Fire Protection Association, U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 11,421 home fires involving grills, hibachis, or barbecues each year between 2017 and 2021. These prevention steps might help keep your family from becoming one of those statistics:

  • Locate the grill at least three feet away from the house, decking, pergolas, overhead branches, and eaves.
  • To avoid flame-ups, clean grease and build-up off the grill racks and trays after each use.
  • Make sure the lid on the grill is up/open before attempting to light it.
  • Never leave your grill unattended, and make sure to keep pets and small children back from it.
  • Use propane and charcoal grills outdoors only, not in a garage or other covered area.
  • When operating a charcoal grill, use only starter fluid. Never add any other flammable liquids to start the fire or keep it going.
  • Before using your grill for the first time each year, be sure to check the gas tank hose for leaks. Apply a light solution of soap and water to the hose. If there is a leak, it will release bubbles. If you detect a leak, either by smell or the soapy bubble test, turn off both the gas tank and grill and call a professional for service.

Invest in a Mobile Monitoring Unit

Summer is a season when the kids are on the go playing with friends and neighbors. A good safety measure might be to slip a discreet mobile monitoring unit into their pocket when they are away from home. In the event of an emergency, they can call for help with the press of a button. Call 1-844-203-5617 to learn more!
